From Dull to Delightful: Revitalizing a Screened Enclosure with Koi Ponds and Stylish Seating

Challenges We Faced

• Plain Concrete Flooring: The existing screen enclosure had dull concrete flooring, making the space feel uninviting and disconnected from the outdoors.

• Cheap PVC Furniture: The basic PVC furniture inside the screen was uncomfortable and lacked style and sophistication.

• Gas Grill Placement: A gas grill was awkwardly placed to one side, making it less functional and visually unappealing.

• Unattractive Grass Expanses: The vast grass area outside the screen enclosure didn’t tie in with the interior space, creating a disconnect between the indoor and outdoor areas.

• Cluttered Potted Plants: Potted plants of various sizes were scattered haphazardly in a corner of the screen, detracting from the overall design.

The Wish List

• More Seating Areas for Entertaining: The clients desired more comfortable seating options for outdoor gatherings.

• Outdoor Grill Area: A dedicated space for grilling and cooking outdoors was a must-have.

• Koi Pond: The clients wanted to add a peaceful and beautiful koi pond to the space.

• Updated Outdoor Furniture: An upgrade to stylish, durable furniture that would complement the home’s architecture.

• Updated Flooring: New flooring that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

• Landscaping Beds: Several large, well-planned landscaping beds to add greenery and life to the area.

The Design Solution

• Updated Flooring: We replaced the boring concrete flooring with beautiful brick pavers inside the screen enclosure. This gave the area a more inviting and polished look.

• Landscaping Rocks: A large, curvilinear bed of landscape rocks was placed at the rear of the screen enclosure, providing a more organized and natural spot for potted plants.

• Stylish Outdoor Furniture: We replaced the cheap PVC furniture with cast iron outdoor furniture that complements the home’s architecture and offers a more sophisticated and comfortable seating area.

• Outdoor Grill Area: We built a stacked stone grill area with a stone countertop, creating a dedicated space for outdoor cooking and entertaining.

• Circular Decks: Two large, circular decks were constructed outside the screen enclosure, using the same brick paver flooring as inside. This cohesive design ties the indoor and outdoor spaces together seamlessly.

• Seating Wall: A stacked stone seating wall was added to the rear of one of the circular decks, offering additional seating for guests while maintaining a stylish, natural look.

• Pathways & Connectivity: Two doors from the screen enclosure lead to the circular decks and a brick paver pathway that wraps around the space. This pathway connects the inside and outside seamlessly, creating flow and accessibility.

• Mass Plantings: The pathway is framed by mass plantings of vibrant agapanthus, purple heart wandering jew, aztec grass, and a single birch tree, providing a lush, colorful backdrop.

• Koi Pond: A short flagstone pathway leads to a stunning koi pond, complete with cascading waterfalls and vibrant plantings, adding a tranquil and visually striking focal point to the design.

The Results

This landscape design transformation created a harmonious and functional outdoor living space. From the upgraded flooring to the new seating areas, outdoor grill, and koi pond, the design successfully blended style, comfort, and practicality.
